The Churches in Agios Stefanos are a cluster of historic Orthodox chapels and monasteries scattered across the coastal village of Agios Stefanos on the island of Kythnos. These whitewashed stone buildings, some dating to the 17th century, serve as active places of worship and local pilgrimage sites. Visitors can walk between them on short paths, observing traditional Cycladic architecture and religious iconography.
What to expect
- Visit the main Church of Agios Stefanos, the village's namesake, with its blue-domed roof and carved wooden iconostasis
- Walk 10 minutes uphill to the Monastery of Panagia Stratilatissa, which offers a panoramic view of the bay and surrounding hills
- See the small chapel of Agios Ioannis Theologos, located near the harbour, where fishermen light candles before sailing
- Observe the annual feast day on 27 December, when locals gather for a service and shared meal in the churchyard
- Each church interior contains hand-painted icons and oil lamps, with some walls showing faded fresco fragments from the 18th century
- The circuit of all four churches takes about 45 minutes on foot, with uneven stone paths suitable for steady walkers
