Surf Lessons in Klong Son is a beginner-focused surf school located on the west coast of Koh Yao Yai, facing the Andaman Sea. The lessons take place on the sandy beach of Klong Son Bay, where gentle waves roll in during the monsoon season from May to October. Each session combines land-based instruction with in-water practice, using soft-top boards suited to first-time surfers.

What to expect

Lessons run for 2 hours, including 20 minutes of beach safety and paddle technique training before entering the water.
All equipment is provided: a soft-top surfboard, leash, and reef-safe sunscreen, with wetsuits available for cooler days.
The teaching area is a shallow, sandy-bottomed bay with waves averaging 0.5 to 1 metre, suitable for adults and children aged 8 and above.
Instructors are local Thai surfers who speak basic English and demonstrate each manoeuvre in the water before you attempt it.
You will practice standing up on the board in waist-deep water, with the instructor physically adjusting your foot placement and balance.
The session ends with a short video review of your attempts, shown on a tablet at the beachside equipment hut.
