Koh Samui's weather shifts between two monsoon periods, and the Gulf coast side generally works well for trips from January through September. Menus around the island lean on seafood pulled from local waters, curries, noodle dishes and tropical fruit. Most arrivals land via a flight, a ferry crossing or a speedboat from the mainland. Thai serves as the everyday language, and English is widely understood in tourist areas, so a handful of Thai phrases go a long way.
