First-time visitors should expect a small, well-regarded salon in central Argostoli rather than a large chain outlet. Greek is the main language on Kefalonia, written in the Greek alphabet, which also appears on road signs and menus, so a few words of Greek help when booking.
Winter brings rain and rough seas to the Greek islands, and many hotels and tavernas shut between November and March, so summer is the busier season. Island bakeries sell spanakopita and tyropita, and vineyards on Santorini, Crete and Paros produce local wines. Lixouri, Sami, Fiskardo, Assos, Myrtos Beach, Poros and Skala are all reachable from Argostoli.
