Java sits within Indonesia, where the climate divides between two monsoons: a drier stretch from May to September and a wetter one from October to April. Food on the island is bold and spice-driven, built around rice, satay, grilled fish and fresh tropical fruit. Domestic flights and fast boats connect Indonesia's islands, with international airports on the main islands, so reaching Java from elsewhere in the archipelago is straightforward. Indonesian is the main language, and English is common in tourist areas, which makes navigating the island simpler for many travellers.
