Surf Lessons in Runaway Bay is a guided surf instruction programme on the north coast of Jamaica, based at the calm, reef-protected beach near the Cardiff Hotel. The lessons are led by local certified coaches who provide all necessary equipment, including soft-top boards and rash vests, for first-time and intermediate surfers. Each session focuses on ocean safety, paddle technique, and standing up on the board in waist-deep water, with a maximum of four students per instructor.
What to expect
- Lessons run for 90 minutes, with a 15-minute beach briefing on wave reading and board handling before entering the water.
- All equipment is included: a 9-foot soft-top surfboard, leash, and rash vest, sized to your weight and skill level.
- You will practise pop-up drills on the sand, then catch 6 to 10 waves per session with the instructor pushing you into each wave.
- The teaching area is a flat, sandy-bottomed bay with waves averaging 1 to 3 feet, suitable for swimmers aged 8 and up.
- Each session ends with a video review on a waterproof phone, showing your take-off and stance for immediate correction.
- Private lessons are available for two people, allowing a tailored pace and extra time on balance and turning.
