About this experience

Surf Lessons in Discovery Bay is a guided surfing programme on the north coast of Jamaica, based at the calm, reef-protected bay near Columbus Park. The lessons are taught by local instructors who tailor each session to the participant's skill level, from first-time paddlers to intermediate riders. Equipment such as soft-top boards and leashes is provided, and the shallow, sandy entry point makes it a safe setting for beginners.

What to expect

  • Each lesson runs for 90 minutes, including a 15-minute land-based tutorial on paddling, popping up, and reading wave direction before entering the water.
  • All equipment is included: a soft-top surfboard, leash, and reef-safe sunscreen, with wetsuits available on request during the cooler months.
  • You will practise catching white-water waves in waist-deep water, with the instructor standing beside you to correct your stance and balance on every ride.
  • The lesson takes place at a fixed spot near the Discovery Bay pier, where the fringing reef reduces swell size, producing consistent 0.5 to 1.5 metre waves suitable for novices.
  • Suitable for ages 8 and up, with a maximum of four students per instructor to ensure individual attention and rapid progress.
  • After the session, you can rinse off in the outdoor freshwater shower and receive a digital photo of your best wave, taken by the instructor from the shoreline.
