The Chiesa di Santa Restituta is the principal church in Lacco Ameno, Ischia, housing the relics of the island's patron saint. This Baroque-style building stands near the Aragonese Castle and the town's thermal springs. Its white facade and tiled dome are visible from the harbour, while the interior contains a wooden statue of the saint and a crypt with ancient Roman columns.
What to expect
- Entry is free and the church is open daily from 8:30 to 12:30 and 16:30 to 19:30, with a typical visit lasting 20-30 minutes.
- Visitors see the silver reliquary bust of Santa Restituta, carried in procession each May 17, and the 18th-century majolica floor tiles.
- The crypt beneath the altar preserves the original 4th-century Christian basilica structure, including four granite columns from a Roman temple.
- The adjacent Museo del Mare (Sea Museum) is included in the same ticket, showing amphorae and anchors recovered from local shipwrecks.
- The church suits history-focused travellers and pilgrims, as it is the only site on Ischia with documented early Christian foundations.
- From the front steps, visitors get a direct view of the Fungo rock, the town's volcanic stone landmark, 200 metres away.
