Japan is an archipelago of several thousand islands stretching from Hokkaido in the north to Okinawa in the south, so Hokkaido sits at the country's northern edge. Japan has four distinct seasons, with hot humid summers and cold winters that bring snow in the north, which shapes when the course is busiest. Japanese macaques, also called snow monkeys, live in the wild on several Japanese islands.

Typhoons approach Japan mainly between August and September, most often striking the southern islands, so Hokkaido usually sees milder late-summer weather than the south.
