Hawaii's tropical climate means the leeward coasts stay drier and sunnier throughout the year, while the wetter season generally runs from November to March. Pāhoa sits on the windward side, where rainfall is more frequent. Hawaiian food culture blends fresh seafood, poke, plate lunches and tropical fruit, and Thai cooking adds another option to that mix. Direct flights from the US mainland bring visitors to the island, with inter-island flights and ferries connecting the main islands. English and Hawaiian are the main languages, so ordering and everyday exchanges are straightforward for most travellers. Kailua-Kona is one nearby place that anchors the island's western side.
