Opening hours are not provided, so plan around a daytime stop rather than a late one. Hilo's setting on the windward side keeps the area green and humid, and the trade winds that blow from the northeast bring most of the rain to this coast. A car is the simplest way to reach the venue and to move between Hilo and the rest of the island.
Hawaiian lunch plates lean on Spam, rice and macaroni salad, a combination that turns up widely in home cooking and casual spots. Because no road or regular ferry connects the Hawaiian islands, travel between them is by air, which matters if you are adding other islands to the trip.
