Surf Lessons in Waikoloa is a beginner-focused surf school operating on the calm, sandy breaks of Waikoloa Beach on the Big Island's Kohala Coast. Each session pairs small groups with certified instructors who teach ocean safety, paddle technique, and pop-up mechanics on land before entering the water. The lesson area is protected by an offshore reef, providing consistent ankle-to-waist-high waves suitable for first-time surfers.
What to expect
- 90-minute group lesson includes a rash guard, soft-top surfboard, and a land-based practice session before entering the water
- Instructors are certified by the State of Hawaii and maintain a 1:4 student-to-teacher ratio in the water
- You will paddle out from the sandy shoreline of Waikoloa Beach, with the Kohala Mountains visible behind the resort coastline
- The lesson targets standing up on your first wave, with instructors pushing you into waves and giving real-time corrections
- Suitable for ages 8 and up, including non-swimmers who wear a provided flotation belt
- After the session, you receive a photo link to download action shots of your ride, taken by the shore crew
