Surf Lessons in Puna is a guided surf instruction activity on the Big Island of Hawaii, based at the black-sand beaches of Puna district. Lessons are conducted by certified instructors in small groups, focusing on ocean safety and beginner technique. The activity operates in the consistent Pacific swells, providing a structured introduction to stand-up surfing.
What to expect
- Two-hour lesson format includes 30 minutes of beach instruction and 90 minutes of in-water practice
- All equipment provided: soft-top surfboard, leash, and reef-safe sunscreen
- Each session covers wave reading, paddle technique, and pop-up mechanics on the sand
- Suitable for first-time surfers aged 8 and older, with a maximum of four students per instructor
- Participants practise in waist-deep water at a protected reef break, with instructors pushing boards into waves
- Post-lesson debrief includes video review of your rides, with footage sent to your email within 24 hours
