Surf Lessons in Kailua-Kona is a guided surfing session on the west coast of Hawaii's Big Island. The activity takes place at Kahaluu Bay, a reef-protected beach known for gentle waves suitable for beginners. Lessons are conducted by certified instructors who provide all necessary equipment for the session.
What to expect
- Each lesson lasts 2 hours, including 20 minutes of beach instruction and 100 minutes of in-water practice.
- The lesson fee includes a soft-top surfboard, reef-safe rash guard, and leash; wetsuits are available for cooler mornings.
- Instructors position you on waves at Kahaluu Bay, where the coral reef creates consistent, waist-high swells in the morning.
- The class is limited to 6 participants per instructor, ensuring individual attention for first-time surfers aged 8 and older.
- You will paddle, pop up, and ride waves toward the sandy shoreline, with instructors pushing you into waves until you stand.
- After the session, rinse off at the on-site outdoor showers and return the board to the van parked at the beach entrance.
