Surf Lessons in Hilo is a guided surf instruction programme on the Big Island of Hawaii, based at Carlsmith Beach Park. The lesson provides a board, reef shoes, and a certified instructor who teaches ocean safety and paddle techniques before riding waves. Each session lasts two hours and is tailored to first-time surfers aged eight and older.
What to expect
- Two-hour lesson includes a soft-top surfboard, reef shoes, and a rash guard
- Instruction covers ocean safety, wave reading, and pop-up technique on the beach before entering the water
- Waves are caught in a protected bay with a sandy bottom, suitable for beginners
- Groups are capped at four students per instructor for individual attention
- Participants learn to paddle, catch a green wave, and stand up on the board
- Sessions run daily at 8:00 am and 1:00 pm, with wetsuit tops provided for cooler mornings
