Language Schools in Puna is a Hawaiian language and culture programme located in the Puna district on the Big Island of Hawaii. It offers structured lessons in the native tongue, taught by local speakers within a rural rainforest setting. The school integrates traditional chants, plant names, and daily phrases into its curriculum.
What to expect
- Classes run for 90 minutes each session, with morning and afternoon options available six days a week.
- Each lesson includes a printed worksheet, a recorded audio clip of the day's phrases, and a small kalo (taro) plant to take home.
- Visitors sit in an open-air halau (thatched pavilion) surrounded by ohia trees and hear the teacher recite oli (chants) before each new vocabulary set.
- The curriculum covers 50 everyday words per week, focusing on weather, ocean, and forest terms specific to the Puna coastline.
- Suitable for absolute beginners and fluent speakers alike, with separate tracks for keiki (children) and makua (adults).
- Every Friday, participants join a guided walk to a nearby lava tube to practise naming native ferns and birds in Hawaiian.
