About this experience

Festivals in Puako is a community-run cultural celebration held along the shoreline of Puako, a small historic village on Hawaii's Big Island. The event showcases local music, hula performances, and craft vendors in a beachside setting, drawing residents and visitors alike. It operates as a family-friendly gathering that honours the area's Hawaiian heritage and coastal lifestyle.

What to expect

The festival runs from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM on a single Saturday each spring, with free entry and parking along Puako Road.
Live hula troupes and slack-key guitar players perform on a shaded stage set within 50 metres of the tide pools.
A row of 30 local artisans sells handmade lauhala weavings, koa wood carvings, and coconut-oil-based skincare products.
Keiki (children) activities include a sand-sculpture contest, a coconut husking demonstration, and a guided tide-pool walk led by a marine naturalist.
Food stalls offer plate lunches with kalua pork, lomi salmon, and haupia, plus fresh coconut water served from whole nuts.
The event suits families, cultural enthusiasts, and slow-paced travellers; seating is on beach mats or lawn chairs, with limited shade after noon.
