Coffee Shops in Pahoa is a self-guided tour of the village's independent cafés, located along Pahoa Village Road on the Big Island's east side. The activity suits visitors who want to sample locally grown Ka'u and Puna coffees while observing the town's bohemian, volcano-adjacent character. Each stop offers a different roast profile, from light and fruity to dark and smoky, often paired with macadamia nut pastries or banana bread.
What to expect
- Tour three to five cafés within a 1.5-kilometre walk along Pahoa Village Road, with each stop taking 10 to 15 minutes for a cup and a look around.
- Sample single-origin Ka'u coffee, grown at 600 to 900 metres elevation, known for its jasmine and citrus notes, at cafés that roast on-site.
- See the town's historic plantation-era storefronts, including tin-roofed buildings and painted murals, between coffee stops.
- Try a 'volcano blend' at one café, which mixes dark-roasted beans with a hint of smoked hickory, a style unique to the Puna district.
- Suitable for solo travellers, couples, or small groups who enjoy slow mornings and chatting with baristas about local farming and lava-zone life.
- Most cafés open from 7:00 am to 2:00 pm daily, so plan the walk for a weekday morning to avoid weekend crowds.
