Coffee Shops in Kailua-Kona is a self-guided tasting tour of the historic coffee belt on Hawaii's Big Island, where visitors sample 100% Kona coffee at working farms and roadside stands. The route runs along the Mamalahoa Highway (Highway 11) between Kailua-Kona town and the upland villages of Holualoa and Captain Cook, with most stops open daily from 7am to 5pm. Each shop offers free samples of their roast, and many also sell chocolate-covered coffee beans and macadamia nuts grown on the same slopes.
What to expect
- Expect to visit 4 to 6 independent farms in a half-day drive, with free 5-ounce sample cups of light, medium, and dark roasts at each stop
- At farms like Greenwell Farms and Mountain Thunder, you can watch the wet-mill processing line where cherry is pulped, fermented, and sun-dried on raised racks
- Most shops include a short 10-minute walking tour of the coffee trees, showing the red cherry harvest and the elevation markers (800 to 2,000 feet) that define Kona coffee
- You will taste the difference between peaberry (round single bean) and the standard flat bean, with prices ranging from $30 to $60 per 8-ounce bag
- The drive between stops is 5 to 15 minutes on narrow, winding roads, so allow 3 to 4 hours total and bring a designated driver for the caffeine-heavy route
- Suitable for solo travellers, couples, and small groups; the shops are wheelchair-accessible at ground level, but the farm tours involve gravel paths and mild slopes
