About this experience

Camel Riding in Kona is a guided camel trek along the windswept coastline of the Big Island, Hawaii, near the historic Keauhou Bay. The 45-minute ride follows a sandy trail through lava fields and ironwood groves, with views of the Pacific Ocean and the distant Mauna Loa volcano. Camels are led by experienced handlers, and the tour operates daily from the ranch base at 78-6725 Mamalahoa Highway.

What to expect

  • Ride a trained camel for 45 minutes on a 1.5-mile loop trail, with the saddle and reins provided
  • See native Hawaiian coastal plants, black lava rock formations, and seasonal whale spouts from November to March
  • Listen to the handler's commentary on camel behaviour and the ranch's conservation work with feral goats
  • Suitable for adults and children aged 5 and older, with a maximum rider weight of 250 pounds
  • Includes a short safety briefing and a photo opportunity with your camel at the trail's end
  • The tour departs at fixed times (9:00, 11:00, 13:00, and 15:00), and you must arrive 15 minutes early to check in
