Wine Tasting in Pico is a guided cellar visit and tasting session on Pico Island, Azores, centred on the UNESCO-listed volcanic terroir. Participants sample wines made from the indigenous Verdelho grape, grown in the island's distinctive black basalt-walled currais. The activity takes place in a traditional adega, where the island's maritime climate and lava soils shape each bottle's character.
What to expect
- A 90-minute guided tour of a working adega, including the stone-walled currais and the barrel room
- Tasting of four wines, including a dry Verdelho, a liqueur-style Verdelho, and a red blend from local grapes
- A paired plate of local cheeses, smoked sausage, and Pico honey bread to accompany the pours
- Explanation of the island's UNESCO classification for its vineyard landscape, including the role of the basaltic rock walls
- Suitable for both novice and experienced tasters, with a non-alcoholic grape juice option available on request
