What to expect

• The Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Carnival runs for two weeks in February, featuring a drag queen gala, an eight-hour street parade with 20 floats, and nightly open-air concerts on the Santa Catalina park stage.
• The Romería de Nuestra Señora del Pino in Teror on 8 September draws 150,000 pilgrims who carry wooden statues and offer local cheeses, wines, and fruits to the Virgin in the basilica square.
• The Fiesta de San Juan in Las Palmas on 23 June includes a midnight beach bonfire on Las Canteras, where attendees jump over flames and bathe in the sea for good luck.
• The Festival del Sur in Agüimes, held each March, presents three days of theatre performances from African and Latin American companies in the town's historic Teatro Auditorio.
• The Fiesta de la Rama in Agaete on 4 August involves a procession of residents carrying palm branches from the harbour to the church, accompanied by drum bands and water-throwing from balconies.
• The Bajada de la Rama in Valsequillo, held in September, features a 12-hour mountain walk from the village to the sanctuary of San Miguel, with stops for traditional folk dances and roasted corn at each of the five rest points.
