Indonesia's islands follow a tropical pattern with two monsoons, the drier stretch generally falling between May and September and the wetter months from October through April. Food across the archipelago leans on rice, satay, grilled fish and tropical fruit, with spice running through much of it. Travellers move between the islands by domestic flights and fast boats, while the larger islands handle international arrivals. Indonesian is the everyday language, though English is widely understood in tourist areas such as Gili Trawangan.
