Diving & Snorkeling in Isola del Giglio is a guided underwater excursion around the granite cliffs and seagrass meadows of this Tuscan island, located 16 kilometres off the Monte Argentario coast. The island’s protected marine area, the Area Marina Protetta di Isola del Giglio, offers clear water and a mix of rocky reefs, caves, and sandy bottoms. Divers and snorkelers access sites by boat from the harbour at Giglio Porto, with depths ranging from 5 to 40 metres depending on the chosen route.
What to expect
- Boat transfer from Giglio Porto to dive sites such as the Secca del Gabbiano or the wreck of the Costa Concordia, with a typical trip lasting 3 to 4 hours including surface interval
- Full scuba equipment rental (BCD, regulator, wetsuit, weights, and tank) is included in the dive package, with a certified guide leading groups of up to 8 divers
- Snorkelers stay at shallow rocky coves like Cala delle Cannelle, where they see damselfish, wrasses, and octopus among Posidonia oceanica seagrass beds
- Underwater visibility ranges from 15 to 30 metres in summer, with water temperatures between 18°C in May and 26°C in August, requiring a 5mm wetsuit for most dives
- Suitable for certified divers (minimum Open Water Diver) and confident swimmers; snorkel tours are calm-water only and last about 90 minutes
- Each dive includes a pre-dive briefing on local currents and protected species, plus a post-dive logbook stamp from the island's diving centre
