Elba's Mediterranean climate brings hot, dry summers and mild, wetter winters, so spring and autumn suit visitors who prefer quieter walking conditions. Italian island cooking leans on seafood, handmade pasta, olive oil and local wines, and the island's summer festas fill the calendar with processions, band music and fireworks. English is widely understood in tourist areas, though a few words of Italian go a long way with local hosts. Hotel Montemerlo suits travellers who want a western Elba base with a strong review record and easy access to the island's other towns.
