Festivals in Frontera is a series of traditional celebrations held in the municipality of Frontera on the island of El Hierro, Canary Islands. These events mark religious and cultural dates with processions, music, and local gastronomy. The festivals rotate among the villages of Tigaday, Sabinosa, and Los Llanillos, reflecting the island's rural heritage.
What to expect
- Attend the patron saint processions in honour of the Virgen de Candelaria in February, with locals carrying the statue through Tigaday's streets
- Watch the Bajada de la Virgen de los Reyes in July, a four-yearly pilgrimage where the image is transported by foot from the mountain shrine to Valverde
- Sample local dishes at the festival food stalls, including roasted goat, wrinkled potatoes with mojo sauce, and fresh cheese from the island's dairy farms
- Join evening dances in the town square with live folk music played on timple and drums, often lasting until midnight
- See the traditional 'salto del pastor' demonstrations, where shepherds leap down steep slopes using a long wooden staff, during the agricultural fairs
- Suitable for families and visitors interested in rural Canarian customs, with most events free to attend and lasting between two and four hours
