The Greek islands are linked by ferries and flights, though only some have airports, making access to Crete relatively straightforward from Athens or a larger hub. Greek is the main language, written in the Greek alphabet, which appears on menus and road signs. Monk seals and loggerhead turtles live around the islands, and many have protected nesting beaches.
