Crete's season runs roughly from May to October, with August the busiest month for ferries and beaches, so early arrival helps. Monk seals and loggerhead turtles live around the islands, and many have protected nesting beaches. Only some islands have airports, while others are reached mainly from Athens or through a larger hub island. The islands split between the Aegean and the Ionian, and Lefkada is joined to the mainland by a bridge.
