The Greek islands have a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wetter winters, and most are rocky and hilly, with olives, grapes and capers growing widely on terraced slopes. Daily life slows in the afternoon, and tavernas serve late into the evening, so an evening meal often stretches well past sunset. Island bakeries sell spanakopita and tyropita, and vineyards on Crete produce local wines.
