Churches in Corvo is a self-guided tour of the island's three historic Catholic churches, located in the main settlement of Vila do Corvo on Corvo Island. The tour covers the 16th-century Church of Nossa Senhora dos Milagres, the island's oldest and most significant religious building, alongside the smaller chapels of São Francisco and Santa Catarina. Each church contains original azulejo tiles, gilded woodwork, and statues brought from mainland Portugal centuries ago.
What to expect
- Visit the Church of Nossa Senhora dos Milagres, built in the 1500s, with its Manueline portal and 17th-century silver processional cross
- See the interior of the Chapel of São Francisco, which houses a carved wooden altarpiece depicting the saint's life
- Inspect the Chapel of Santa Catarina, a 19th-century structure with a single nave and a bell tower visible from the harbour
- Allow 45 minutes to walk between all three sites, which are within 200 metres of each other in Vila do Corvo
- Suitable for history and architecture visitors; no admission fee is charged, and each church is open daily from 9:00 to 18:00
- Observe the local congregation's weekly mass on Sundays at 10:00 at the main church, where visitors may sit quietly at the rear
