The Philippines has a wet season from roughly June to November and a drier season from December to May, so travel plans shift with the calendar. The country is predominantly Catholic, and town fiestas honouring patron saints are held across the islands, bringing processions and street food to places like Danao. Spanish rule lasted more than three centuries before United States administration and independence in 1946, a history still visible in place names. The Philippines lies within the Coral Triangle and has extensive coral reefs and mangrove forests, which rewards time spent on and near the water.
