About this experience

Festivals in Amed is a cultural programme of traditional Balinese ceremonies and village celebrations held along the eastern coastal strip of Amed, Bali. The events centre on Hindu temple anniversaries (odalan), full-moon processions, and local harvest rituals that occur throughout the year. Visitors attend as observers, with seating areas provided near the main temple in Amed village.

What to expect

  • Each festival lasts 1 to 3 days, with the main procession starting at 9am and ending by 2pm.
  • You will see women carrying tall fruit towers (banten) and men bearing gamelan instruments to the Pura Penataran temple.
  • The schedule includes a barong dance performance by the local banjar (community group) on the second afternoon.
  • A communal feast (megibung) is served to all attendees at noon on the final day, using traditional banana-leaf plates.
  • The events suit travellers interested in Balinese Hindu culture and who can tolerate heat and crowds of up to 200 locals.
  • Photography is allowed during the procession, but flash is prohibited inside the temple courtyard.
