Churches in Vathy is a self-guided walking tour of the historic churches clustered around the harbour of Vathy, a village on the northern coast of Aegina. The route includes the 19th-century Church of Agios Nikolaos, the island's patron saint of sailors, and the smaller Chapel of the Dormition of the Virgin. Visitors can observe traditional Cycladic architecture, with whitewashed walls, blue domes, and carved wooden iconostases.
What to expect
- Visit the main Church of Agios Nikolaos, built in 1835, with its marble belfry and interior frescoes depicting the life of the saint.
- Walk the 500-metre harbourfront path connecting four churches, taking 30 to 45 minutes at a relaxed pace.
- See the Chapel of the Dormition of the Virgin, which houses a 17th-century icon of the Panagia, brought from Constantinople.
- Observe the annual feast day on 6 December, when locals hold a procession with the icon of Agios Nikolaos around the harbour.
- Suitable for history enthusiasts and casual walkers; the route is flat and accessible for wheelchairs and prams.
- Entry to all churches is free, with opening hours from 8:00 to 13:00 and 17:00 to 20:00 daily, except during services.
